Biography:
Virtuoso lutenist, singer and composer, probably born in Dublin in Ireland, John Dowland lived in France between 1580 and 1584 (in service with the English Ambassador to Paris). He lived in Germany between 1594 and 1598 (at the Royal Courts of Brunswick and Hesse, Nuremberg). In 1595 he went to Italy (Rome, Venice, Florence). Between 1598 and 1606 he was a lutenist at the court of Christian IV of Denmark. In 1601 he returned to London to buy instruments. From 1597, John Dowland published books of songs as well as pieces for the lute. In 1612 he was appointed to the post of second lutenist at the court of Charles I of England. Famous in all Europe, John Dowland was probably the greatest lutenist of his time.
